This two-day lesson connects Langston Hughes and MLK. It asks students to walk through analyzing a poem by Langston Hughes and analyzing MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech, looking for poetic devices. I usually teach this towards the end of my poetry unit, but it could definitely be an isolated two-day lesson if poetry has already been taught.
I love that this lesson connects two historical figures as well as different types of writing. The lesson could be structured with the materials provided in the following ways:
