Product Description

This two-day lesson connects Langston Hughes and MLK. It asks students to walk through analyzing a poem by Langston Hughes and analyzing MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech, looking for poetic devices. I usually teach this towards the end of my poetry unit, but it could definitely be an isolated two-day lesson if poetry has already been taught.

I love that this lesson connects two historical figures as well as different types of writing. The lesson could be structured with the materials provided in the following ways:

  • Independent work
  • Pre-work for an essay
  • Small Groups
  • Large Group instruction
  • Substitute Plans

Materials provided:

  • Langston Hughes poem
  • Structured Analysis Questions for the poem
  • Answer Key
  • "I Have a Dream" speech
  • Structured Analysis Questions for the speech
  • Answer Key
  • Lesson Instructions
