M&M Inference & Observation Lab
Share

Description

NOTE! -- This can be done by students at HOME if necessary for REMOTE/DISTANCE LEARNING.

USES SAFE/EASY/FUN Materials! -- M&M's, petri dish (can be bowl), water, colored pencils.

GOOD FOR 4th grade through UPPER GRADES! (7th, 8th, 9th...).

This is the traditional M&M lab, but ON STEROIDS! This VERY CLEAR lab guides students through a whole journey of DISCOVERY. One section even presents a DISCREPANT EVENT!

Students take a PERSONAL STAKE in their learning!

Students make predictions BEFORE each experiment by drawing what they expect to happen, and then they draw what REALLY HAPPENED after each one! They also WRITE short answers comparing & contrasting their predictions vs. their results.

This lab has FIVE EXPERIMENTS which start simple, and then get progressively more complex. The LAST & ULTIMATE step has students designing/creating their OWN setup with the M&M's.

THIS IS AN ELEVEN PAGE PACKET and the last page has students reflect/review on their lab, and what inferences and observations are. ALSO COMES WITH TEACHER'S NOTES and one powerpoint slide for cleanup.

NEW TEACHER? EXPERIENCED TEACHER? Does not matter! This is a fun, safe, and easy to do hands-on lab that students LOVE. I used to do this over MULTIPLE DAYS! You could do this lab for 5 days in a row, if you WANTED TO STRETCH IT OUT, by having students do ONE experiment every day -- in this case it would NOT take up the entire class period. TALK ABOUT GETTING STUDENTS EXCITED TO COME BACK TO YOUR CLASS EACH DAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Brian, I'm glad you loved the lab! As you can see, I'm a perfectionist, and I am happy to share these labs and resources which I've spent 20+ years on over my career... Please feel free to share this lab for free with your person, close friends and other teachers whom you work with. Also family friends, and people you know who have kids! I'm passionate about GOOD SCIENCE being out in the world, and also the fact that LEARNING SHOULD BE FASCINATING AND FUN.
