To get an answer about the amount, Pour out the candies and count, count, count.
Sort them by color. Call each group a set. Count each different color, but don’t eat them yet!
All numbers have value, a fact we must face. See them in columns. Put them in their place.
This is an edible math activity using a hands-on manipulative materials: m&m candies! Although feel free to substitute for Skittles, Reese's Pieces, Smarties, or colored cereal such as fruit loops. -- anything that kids can actually eat. [BE ALERT TO STUDENT’S FOOD ALLERGY WARNINGS! This activity reinforces estimating, plotting and graphing, mean, median, and mode. It can be extended to include calculating fractions and percentages. It can be used across many age/grade ranges and can be modified to suit any level. It is in Microsoft Word .doc form so that Ts can customize the discussion to fit the needs of their Ss.
