While doing a M&M lesson, my students realized that some colors were far more prominent in their fun- size bags. So, with some research, we found out what percentages of each color the M&M Company believes are in each bag….Then, we put this to a test!! Using proportions, they figured out how many of each color they expected to find after opening their bags. And determined how close their results were to the expected results. This activity was furthered with the kids getting the opportunity to create their own “perfect bag”. Not only was this activity relevant and interesting to the kids’ lives, but they thought on a higher level (DOK 2 & 3) and it made math fun!
