Do you need a quick activity that grabs your students’ attention, builds a morning routine, and teaches concepts within a meaningful context for your students? MORNING QUESTION is your answer! Your kids will love it!

My kids enjoy “Morning Question” because … just like adults … it evokes their curiosity and interest! Does everyone like pizza? What about cats or dogs? Morning Question is similar to a television game show, but in our classroom everyone gets to play!

It’s perfect to introduce during the first month of school as you introduce and reinforce recognition of words, letters, and …… NAME WRITING! As the children enter the room, the question will be in the pocket chart. Some students will be able to READ it independently, others will need some help. Eventually, your little ones will realize the pattern every day: Do you like …. cats or dogs or lunch and recess? (This pattern will change in the next monthly set … yet to be finished!)

There are many ways for students to answer the questions: Here are a few ideas:

*Each student prints his/her name on a 4” by 2” paper using a pencil. These are known as “NAME TICKETS.” Each child places his/her Name Ticket under a column. During your “Morning Rug Time” count the names to determine the RESULTS.

*If NAME TICKETS are not appropriate, laminate a photo or a NAME TAG for each child to place in the pocket chart.

*In addition to … or instead of using names in the pocket chart … choose a “SURVEY TAKER”. He/she takes the preprinted survey paper, or writes the question independently on 8.5 by 11 paper and places it on a clipboard. Throughout the day the Survey Taker asks individual students the question. Everyone can’t wait to find out the results!

*Read the question as a group and have a show of hands! Tabulate the results using TALLY marks. This is a great way to practice making tallies early in the school year!
