This is a performance assessment designed specifically for the NGSS MS-ESS1-3 benchmark.

Learning Target: Students can analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties in the solar system.

In this assessment, students use the 3 Dimensions of NGSS to argue whether humans should colonize Mars or Europa. They begin by analyzing data about Mars and Europa, including:

  • Atmospheric composition
  • Percentage of water
  • Rotational period
  • Average temperature
  • Average distance from Earth
  • Cost of fuel

Then, students use this data to develop a CER about which planetary object is optimal for colonization.
