Dive into the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)! Create a scale model of the layers of the Earth using register tape. Students will be able to get a good grasp on how thin the crust is compared to the rest of the layers. The finished cross-section model will be constructed to a scale of 1 cm = 100 km. The finished product will be measured, labeled, and colored. The completed products make a great bulletin board. Suggestion: (based on experience - lol) Have the students do everything in pencil first. After getting the OK from the teacher, trace the labels and depths with a Sharpie. Finally, color with crayons or colored pencils. Enjoy!
