In this introduction to the theory of plate tectonics, students role play a conversation between Alfred Wegener and his wife, Elsa. Bringing history alive, students consider the evidence Wegener found and what it means. They also learn about some of the controversy of his ideas, offering discussion around the uncertainties in science.
Includes teacher's notes, role play cards and a link to a plate tectonics activity. You will want to download this with the accompanying free PowerPoint. This lesson can be done in two class periods and aligns with Next Generation Science Standard (NGSS) MS-ESS2-3.
