About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS 4-ESS2-2. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Earthquake and Volcano Mapping Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Interpret and analyze data so to predict where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are more and less common.
2. Identify the relationship between earthquakes and volcanic activity with tectonic plate boundaries.
3. Discuss the predictability of an earthquake and volcanic eruption relative to other natural hazards.
4. Discuss the development of early detection and warning systems that can mitigate the negative effect of an earthquake or volcanic eruption.

Science Skills Station
Students will interpret and analyze data from an interactive map of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Students will use the map to identify patterns in the location of seismic events and make predictions about the probability of an earthquake or volcanic eruption for different locations.

Narrative Station
Students will read about relationships between tectonic plate boundaries, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Students will also watch a video about predicting earthquakes and study a map of that summarizes the ”seismic risk” for locations across the globe.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to mapping and predicting earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will evaluate earthquakes and tsunami early detection and warning systems. Students will consider the constraints in predicting these events and will assess the practicality and use of these systems.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

Important Notes:
This lab can be completed in one class period (approximately one hour). However, I strongly suggest allowing two class periods (approximately two hours) for this lab so students have more time for higher-order thinking activities.
