About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS MS-ESS3-5. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Global Warming Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives:
1. Explain how the greenhouse effect keeps Earth warm.
2. Identify factors that contribute to global warming.
3. Debate human contributions to climate change.
4. Explain how global warming impacts the biosphere.

Science Skills Station
Students will analyze a graph that shows Earth’s average temperature and the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Students will analyze graphs and “before and after” pictures to determine the effects that global climate change has on living and nonliving components of the biosphere.

Narrative Station
Students will watch a video about the greenhouse effect and how it is important to keeping Earth warm, so to sustain life on Earth. Students will read a second informational text about climate change due to increased human emission of greenhouse gases (global warming). They will learn about the key greenhouse gases emitted by humans and activities that contribute to the emission of these gases.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to the greenhouse effect, climate change and global warming. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will identify specific human activities that contribute to greenhouse gas emission. Then they will assess solutions that intend to curb human emissions of greenhouse gases. The will assess the solutions for efficacy (benefit), feasibility and cost.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students can conduct one of the 11 standard synthesis projects, but I strongly suggest using the directed synthesis project to supplement NGSS MS-ESS3-5 and to best integrate and apply the information learned in this lab. In the directed project, students will argue climate change due to human activities. Students will consider important questions and issues with climate change so to argue how and why (or how and why not) humans should make changes that reduce human greenhouse gas emissions.
