About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory partially satisfies NGSS MS-LS1-7. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Cellular Respiration Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Identify the reactants and products of cellular respiration.
2. Discuss how energy released through the process of cellular respiration is converted into a useable form, ATP.
3. Investigate how exercise impacts the demand for oxygen and glucose and thus, the rate of cellular respiration.
4. Identify organ systems important to cellular respiration.
5. Compare and contrast aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
6. Use a model to describe how food is converted into simple nutrients and how the atoms in simple nutrients are rearranged in the process of cellular respiration to release energy that supports growth and survival.

Science Skills Station
Students will conduct an investigation to study how exercise impacts the ability of cells to perform cellular respiration. Students will measure changes in heart rate to make inferences about how the body responds to exercise. If time allows, students will conduct an additional investigation to study what happens when the body cannot adjust to meet the demands for oxygen to perform cellular respiration.

Narrative Station
Students will read a passage about cellular respiration and organ systems important to the process. Students will also watch a video about the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to cellular respiration. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will use a model to study how food is broken down into simple nutrients (molecules) and how the atoms in those nutrients are rearranged to release energy that supports growth and survival. Students will consider the organ systems important to obtaining food (and oxygen, which is also required for cellular respiration) and release the waste products of cellular respiration.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

This download includes:
• A pre-lab assignment and post-lab reflection
• Directions and questions for each lab station
• Student recording sheets
• Teacher Key

Additional Materials Required:
2 Computers or tablets
1 Calculator
