About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory partially NGSS MS-LS1-8. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Responding to Sensory Information & Learning Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Investigate how sensory organs gather information from a stimulus and the brain coordinates a response to the stimulus.
2. Discuss how sensory organs, the brain and the nervous system gather and process sensory information to produce an immediate response.
3. Discuss how sensory information can be processed and remembered as part of learning.
4. Explain how learning alters future behavior and impacts an animal’s survival.

Science Skills Station
Students will conduct an investigation to study how sensory organs gather sensory information and processed by the brain to produce an immediate response. Students will also consider how the brain stores sensory information as memories as part of learning and how learning alters future behavior.

Narrative Station
Students will read a passage about how the nervous system receives, processes and responds to sensory information. Students will also watch a video about how the brain receives and delivers information as electrical impulses so to coordinate response to sensory information.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to responding to sensory information and learning. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will evaluate techniques that impact the ability to store memories of sensory information. Students will use techniques that should impact their ability to solve a jigsaw puzzle. They will consider how learning impacts the ability to solve a jigsaw puzzle as well.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
