About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.
SNAPs lab activities have five components:
• Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
• Narrative Station to build science literacy
• Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
• Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.
Ecological Succession Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Describe the process of ecological succession.
2. Compare and contrast primary and secondary succession.
3. Interpret and analyze data so to describe how ecological succession impacts the complexity and diversity of living things over time.
4. Evaluate how the progressive habitation of more complex population affects the population of existing populations in an ecosystem.
5. Develop a model of ecological succession using quantitative data about the complexity and diversity of organisms in an ecosystem.
Science Skills Station
Students will study primary and secondary succession at this station. They will be presented with illustrations of an ecosystem undergoing succession. Students will have to sequence the photos and determine whether primary or secondary succession occurs.
Students will read a text about primary and secondary ecological succession at this station. They will also watch a video about ecological succession. Specifically, students will watch a video about scientists studying ecological succession in real time after the eruption of Mount Saint Helen’s in 1980.
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to ecological succession. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.
Students will be provided quantitative data about the complexity and diversity of communities in an ecosystem over time. Students will use the data to develop a model that describes how ecological succession occurs in the ecosystem and how this process impacts the population of organisms in the ecosystem.
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS
This laboratory satisfies NGSS MS-LS2-4. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - to meet the standard. This lab also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.
