Product Description
About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS MS-LS4-2. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standards. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Comparative Anatomy Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Compare and contrast homologous, analogous and vestigial structures.
2. Evaluate the use of homologous, analogous and vestigial structures in determining evolutionary relationships between organisms.
3. Form arguments as to how comparative anatomy provides evidence that supports or refutes evolutionary relationships between species.
4. Use anatomical structures to infer evolutionary relationships between modern and extinct species.

Science Skills Station
Students will study homologous, analogous and vestigial structures at this station. Students will make observations and analyze data so to determine which structures can be used to imply evolutionary relationships and which cannot. Specifically, students will study the bones in the upper limbs of whales, humans, cats and dogs; the function of upper limbs in birds, insects and bats; and nonfunctional structures in humans and whales.

Narrative Station
Students will read a text about comparative anatomy. They will also watch a video that summarizes the similarities and differences between homologous and analogous structures.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to homologous, analogous and vestigial structures. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will use comparative anatomy to determine evolutionary relationships between living and extinct species. Students will be provided problems that must be solved by identifying the type of structures being compared (homologous or analogous and whether those structures can be used to imply evolutionary relationships and/or lines of evolutionary descent.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Suggestions for projects that are best suited for this particular lab are included. It is up to the teacher to control this portion of the lab, and thus, the higher-order skills utilized in this activity. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

This download includes:
