About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory partially satisfies NGSS MS-PS1-1. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Atomic Structure Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Describe the structure and size of an atom.
2. Identify the mass and charge of subatomic particles.
3. Model the structure of an atom.

Science Skills Station
Students will study the results of Rutherford’s Gold Foil Experiment. They will analyze and interpret the data obtained from Rutherford’s experiments to draw a conclusion about the structure of an atom. Students will also graph data to determine and illustrate the mass of subatomic particles.

Narrative Station
Students will read an informative text about how our understanding of atomic structure has changed over the years. They will learn how and why we use the Rutherford-Bohr Atomic Model as a reference when studying atomic structure. Students will also read about the size, mass and composition of atoms. They will learn about the three subatomic particles and the forces that hold an atom together.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to atoms and atomic structure. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will build a model of an atom using materials provided to them. Students will have to choose items that proportionally represent the space and subatomic particles within an atom.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

Additional Materials Required:
1 Computer or Tablet
Pom-pom balls
Beads (of varying size)
Toothpicks and small Post-its (to label parts of a model atom)
Stiff paper (1 sheet per group – on which to build the model)
