About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.
SNAPs lab activities have five components:

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.
Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS MS-PS1-3. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.
Synthetic Products Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives:
1. Compare and contrast natural and synthetic materials.
2. Describe how natural resources are used to make synthetic products.
3. Explain how synthetic products impact society.
Science Skills Station
Students will classify important materials as natural or synthetic. Then they will design an experiment that will help determine whether a material is natural or synthetic.
Students will read about the differences between natural resources and synthetic products. They will learn about plant-based, animal-based and petroleum-based synthetic products that are important to our way of life.
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to synthetic products. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.
Students will evaluate replacement of fossil fuels (as a source of energy) with alternative fuels. Specifically, they will study the replace of gasoline and diesel with E85 ethanol, algae-based biogasoline and biodiesel.
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
