About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS MS-PS2-3. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Electromagnets & Electric Generators Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Build a simple electromagnet.
2. Determine factors that affect an electromagnet’s magnetic force.
3. Compare and contrast an electromagnet, electric generator and electric motor.
4. Evaluate ways engineers exploit the relationship between electricity and magnetism with wireless charging.

Science Skills Station
At this station, students will build a simple electromagnet. They will conduct controlled experiments using the electromagnet in order answer questions about factors that affect the strength of the electromagnet’s magnetic force.

Narrative Station
At this station, students will read about electromagnets, electric generators and electric motors. Students will learn how electric and magnetic forces are implicated in each of these devices. They will also learn how mechanical energy is required or generated in the operation of an electric generator and motor.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to electromagnets, electric generators and electric motors. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
At this station, students will apply the engineering design process to evaluate wireless charging. Students will apply ideas about electricity and magnetism so to explain how engineers exploit the relationship between them in the creation of wireless charging. Students will identify the benefits and limitations to wireless charging and ways wireless charging could be improved so to expand its use.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. It is up to the teacher to control this portion of the lab, and thus, the higher-order skills utilized in this activity. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
