About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS MS-PS3-5. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Temperature Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Discuss temperature as a measure of the average kinetic energy of a substance.
2. Use a mathematical equation to convert between temperature scales.
3. Explain how a change in temperature provides evidence of thermal energy transfer.
4. Use a model to show how temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of a substance.

Science Skills Station
Students will observe and record the temperature change of water in a beaker over a five-minute period. From these observations, students will construct an argument that supports (or refutes) a claim that thermal energy was transferred to or from the water.

Narrative Station
Students will read a passage about the relationship between temperature and thermal energy. Students will also watch a video about temperature as a measure of the average kinetic energy of a substance.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to temperature. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will use a physical model to show how temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of a substance. Students will make observations and use the model to explain how the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance is reflected in the temperature of the substance.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

2 Graduated cylinders
2 Thermometers
2 Hotplates
