About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS MS-PS4-1. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Waves and Energy Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Describe the relationship between the amplitude of a mechanical wave and its energy.
2. Compare and contrast how transverse and longitudinal waves transfer energy.
3. Use computer models to explain how sound wave characteristics correspond with physical observations of sound.
4. Evaluate prototypes that harness energy from water waves.

Science Skills Station
Students will study the relationship between amplitude and the energy carried by a wave. Students will graph, interpret and analyze data to study the relationship between seismic wave amplitude, magnitude and energy. Students will make observations of sound waves to determine the physical characteristic of sound that relates to the energy carried by sound waves.

Narrative Station
Students will read about energy transfer by mechanical waves so to better understand that waves transfer energy, not matter. Students will also watch a video about how the amplitude of a mechanical wave is related to the wave’s energy.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to waves and energy. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will evaluate the use of wave power to generate electricity. Specifically, students will evaluate three different prototypes that harness energy from water waves. Students will consider the use of wave power against other sources of renewable and nonrenewable energy. If time allows, students will evaluate how scientists and engineers apply the engineering design process to developing the wave energy industry.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

Additional Materials Required:
3 Computers

Important Note:
One computer must have Adobe Flash installed and working speakers. Students will use a virtual oscilloscope to study sound waves. Flash is required to run the activity. Speakers are needed to observe sound.
