About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS MS-PS4-2. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Wave Behavior Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Observe and describe how light and mechanical waves behave when they encounter a barrier or enter a new medium.
2. Observe and describe how light and mechanical waves behave when they interact with each other.
3. Compare and contrast mediums that cause a wave to be reflected, absorbed or transmitted.
4. Use models to explain why materials are best suited to transmit, reflect or absorb waves.

Science Skills Station
Students will observe wave behaviors at this station. First, students will observe reflection, refraction and absorption of light waves and make diagrams of those observations. Second, students will observe interference and diffraction of water waves and make diagrams of those observations.

Narrative Station
Students will read about wave behaviors at this station. Specifically, they will read about reflection, refraction, absorption, diffraction and interference. Students will also watch a video about noise-canceling headphones as an example of how engineers manipulate wave behavior to solve problems.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to wave behaviors. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will solve problems by identifying materials that are best suited for reflecting, transmitting or absorbing waves. Students will observe different materials, choose the material that best suits a particular function and then make an illustration that describes why the material is best suited for the function.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
