African Music Ensemble Assignment - Obi Senya Na
I sincerely hope you and your students enjoy this project as much as both myself and my students have! This is truly one of my most favourite assignments for my Year 8 classes each year! This is completed in class time and as part of the Unit of Work— The Beginnings of Rock - available in my store.
There are three main parts to this assignment— composing, performing and reviewing. I always teach the melody as a class ensemble with each student learning on a melodic percussion instrument. Once they know the melody they break into groups and compose rhythmic and melodic ostinatos together and create a performance— I get my students to perform the melody twice. The next part is to record the ensembles, then they can edit them (depending on time and resources) and then they review another group’s performance and hand it in for marking. This usually takes a couple of weeks of lessons— but how long you spend on this is up to you.
