Beginnings of Rock
African and Jazz Music
Unit of Work for Middle School Students
This resource is designed for Music students in the Middle School. The unit includes lessons on African Music, African Instruments, History of Jazz, Jazz Instruments and Features of Jazz Music.
Each lesson includes reading strategies from the Super Six— Making Connections, Predicting, Questioning, Monitoring, Visualising and Summarising. There are learning activities to help increase the literacy skills of your students while they learn about the Beginnings of Rock.
To accompany the Lessons there are either a set of guided listening questions OR a P.E.E.L. paragraph writing strategy with a focus on one Concept of Music.
In this resource the pages are deliberately doubled—one coloured version for classroom use on an interactive whiteboard, and a printable version. For my own classes I have enough copies of the printable version for the students to share one between two. Students then write into their workbooks OR you could copy and hand out the worksheets that accompany each lesson—the choice is yours.
For the classroom version, I include links to the music using youtube OR an MP3 file. For copyright reasons I cannot include the listening examples—but they are all popular songs that easily purchased and then inserted into the PDF file. To do this go to Tools—Insert Media OR Link—draw a box on the PDF where you want it—browse file or insert link. When doing this I save the file after each new addition but check it first!!! That way you don’t end up with the wrong files in there.
I hope you and your students enjoy this unit of work as much as my students have. While studying this unit of work my students complete the African Music Ensemble Assignment—Obi Senya Na which can be purchased separately through my store, BUT is included in this resource! As part of the assignment you will view two videoed performance versions of the song that my class of 2013 did for me - they were an amazing class!!!!
I use this unit as the first for my mandatory year 8 Music students. After this unit they then complete Instruments of Rock and Pop, and lastly, Pioneers of Rock. All of these units of work are available in my store.
