Product Description
The Instruments of Rock and Pop

This resource is designed for Music students in the Middle School. The unit includes lessons on The Electric Guitar, The Bass Guitar, The Drum Kit, The Saxophone, The Piano and the Role of Instruments which includes information about the different voice types.

Each lesson includes reading strategies from the Super Six— Making Connections, Predicting, Questioning, Monitoring, Visualising and Summarising. There are learning activities to help increase the literacy skills of your students while they learn about the Instruments of Rock & Pop.

To accompany each of the Lessons there are either a set of guided listening questions OR a P.E.E.L. paragraph writing strategy with a focus on one Concept of Music. Included in this version are a variety of extension activities for your gifted and talented students.
In this resource the pages are deliberately doubled—one coloured version for classroom use on an interactive whiteboard, and a printable version. For my own classes I have enough copies of the printable version for the students to share one between two. Students then write into their workbooks OR you could copy and hand out the worksheets that accompany each lesson—the choice is yours.

For the classroom version, I include links to the music using youtube OR an MP3 file. For copyright reasons I cannot include the listening examples—but they are all popular songs that easily purchased and then inserted into the PDF file. To do this go to Tools—Insert Media OR Link—draw a box on the PDF where you want it—browse file or insert link. When doing this I save the file after each new addition but check it first!!! That way you don’t end up with the wrong files in there.

I use this as my second teaching unit with my mandatory year 8 students. While completing this unit of work my students complete the Middle School Rock Project where students create a CD cover, t-shirt and logo design for an imaginary or real music artist or group. This is available for purchase in my store - Middle School Rock Music Project.
