Kings and Queens of Rock and Pop
This resource is designed for Music students in the Middle School. The unit includes lessons on artists and musicians such as The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, and Michael Jackson. Each lesson includes information on the style of music, the biography of the artist, a Super Six Reading Strategy, a listening activity and an optional extension activity. There is also a BONUS section that includes lessons on the following modern day Kings and Queens—Bon Jovi, INXS, Kylie Minogue, P!nk, Beyonce, Eminem and Bruno Mars.
Each lesson includes reading strategies from the Super Six— Making Connections, Predicting, Questioning, Monitoring, Visualising and Summarising. There are learning activities to help increase the literacy skills of your students while they learn about The Kings and Queens of Rock and Pop.
In this resource the pages are deliberately doubled—one coloured version for classroom use on an interactive whiteboard, and a printable version. For my own classes I have enough copies of the printable version for the students to share one between two. Students then write into their workbooks OR you could copy and hand out the worksheets that accompany each lesson—the choice is yours.
For the classroom version, I include links to the music using youtube OR an MP3 file. For copyright reasons I cannot include the listening examples—but they are all popular songs that easily purchased and then inserted into the PDF file. To do this go to Tools—Insert Media OR Link—draw a box on the PDF where you want it—browse file or insert link. When doing this I save the file after each new addition but check it first!!! That way you don’t end up with the wrong files in there.
