Music Analysis Assignment 3 - Comparison
I have used this type of Assignment for years with my Elective Music Classes in Years 9-10. This is the third in the series, and each subsequent assignment gets harder. The concepts of music that are focused on in this resource are - PITCH, DURATION, TONE COLOUR/TIMBRE, TEXTURE, STRUCTURE/FORM, DYNAMICS & EXPRESSIVE TECHNIQUES. It can be used multiple times and with any music that you have selected for study!
When I hand out this assignment, I explicitly teach the class how to do the written comparison paragraphs on two pieces of music that we are currently studying. I also give students time in class to prepare for the assignment—mainly so I can give them help at the point of need. I have found that through this assignment students gain valuable skills in research, aural/listening and writing.
Over the years I have asked students to present their Viva Voce ( which means live voice) either to the whole class OR just to the teacher—it depended on the number of students and also their anxiety levels! In the state I teach in, our Year 12 students can be examined on their presentation of a Viva Voce and it is only to 2-3 external markers, so I have found that presenting these to the teacher only has been more efficient.
