This resource is designed for Music students in the Middle School. The unit includes lessons on The Roots of Rock ‘n’ Roll, The Blues, Development of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Fats Domino, Bill Haley and the Comets, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley.
Each lesson includes reading strategies from the Super Six— Making Connections, Predicting, Questioning, Monitoring, Visualising and Summarising. There are learning activities to help increase the literacy skills of your students while they learn the History of Rock ’n’ Roll.
To accompany each of the Lessons there are either a set of guided listening questions OR a P.E.E.L. paragraph writing strategy with a focus on one Concept of Music. In the recent update I have included a variety of extension activities for the gifted and talented students!
In this resource the pages are deliberately doubled—one coloured version for classroom use on an interactive whiteboard, and a printable version. For my own classes I have enough copies of the printable version for the students to share one between two. Students then write into their workbooks OR you could copy and hand out the worksheets that accompany each lesson—the choice is yours.
For the classroom version, I include links to the music using youtube OR an MP3 file. For copyright reasons I cannot include the listening examples—but they are all popular songs that easily purchased and then inserted into the PDF file. To do this go to Tools—Insert Media OR Link—draw a box on the PDF where you want it—browse file or insert link. When doing this I save the file after each new addition but check it first!!! That way you don’t end up with the wrong files in there.
I use this unit of work with my Year 8 students as the last unit of work we do for the mandatory Music course. My students complete Beginnings of Rock, Instruments of Rock and then this unit. Along the way students complete the two assignments - African Music Project as well as the Middle School Rock Project. All of these products are available at my store so don't forget to check them out.
