This resource is designed for Music students in the Middle School. The unit includes lessons on What is Music?, Important Terms, Duration, Metre, Rap Music & Metre, Rhythm Note Values and Time Signatures. Next time I teach this unit, which which will be in 2016, I will be including performance activities using Bucket Drumming to reinforce the note values and how they are performed - I can't wait!!!!
Each lesson includes reading strategies from the Super Six— Making Connections, Predicting, Questioning, Monitoring, Visualising and Summarising. There are learning activities to help increase the literacy skills of your students while they learn about reading note values.
Also included in this unit are Two Composition and Performance Assessments. All the Assessment information, Marking Criteria and Marking Sheets are included. There are also Extension Activities for the Gifted and Talented students who would like to work beyond what is expected at this level.
In this resource the pages are deliberately doubled—one coloured version for classroom use on an interactive whiteboard, and a printable version. For my own classes I have enough copies of the printable version for the students to share one between two. Students then write into their workbooks OR you could copy and hand out the worksheets that accompany each lesson—the choice is yours.
For the lessons on Duration and Metre I create a listening exercise using Music that the students are familiar with, I cannot include this as it changes from class to class as well as breach of copyright. I use the free program AUDACITY to edit my music for classroom use—it is very user friendly. For the classroom version, I include links to the music using youtube OR an MP3 file. For copyright reasons I cannot include the listening examples—but they are all popular songs that easily purchased and then inserted into the PDF file. To do this go to Tools—Insert Media OR Link—draw a box on the PDF where you want it—browse file or insert link. When doing this I save the file after each new addition but check it first!!! That way you don’t end up with the wrong files in there.
I hope you and your students enjoy this unit of work as much as my students have. If you like this product have a look at some of my other units of work - Beginnings of Rock - African and Jazz Music, Instruments of Rock and Pioneers of Rock. All of these units have the Super Six Reading strategies embedded in them.
