The Drum Kit Mini Unit of Work for Middle School Students
This unit of work can be used as a whole mini teaching unit to introduce students to the Drum Kit OR as short independent lessons on the Drum Kit.
These lessons have been used for several years with year 7 and 8 students with great success. Experience has found that the drum rhythms included in this unit are usually enough to give students the chance to see whether or not they want to continue to play the Drum Kit in the future.
Included in the unit is information to introduce students to rhythm and note values prior to performing and using the drum kit. There is also a Performance Assessment with marking criteria, SMART Goal page for students to complete when they are given the task, as well as a Reflection Question page after the performance has been completed.
The difficulty with teaching this instrument to a whole class is that there is usually one Drum Kit in each classroom, to overcome this, it is encouraged to have a set of drum sticks for each student and learn “air drums” first, then each student gets a go on the drum kit while others are air drumming!
