My Father’s Dragon: PRE-READING PACKET for Phonics and Vocabulary Development
+ Answer Key
This packet focuses on preparing to read by working on phonics, vocabulary, and dictionary skills.
Focusing on these skills within the context of the book they are reading together make the skills more meaningful to the students. In addition, because all of the exercises are based on words and sentences in the text, completion of the pre-reading skills will make the chapter accessible to even your struggling readers.
My Father’s Dragon: WRITING PACKET—Five writing assignments aligned to Common Core Standards
This packet contains five writing assignments covering the types of writing in the Common Core for grade 3: description, narrative, opinion, and informative. Because of the recursive nature of the Common Core standards, I can use it in my combined 2nd/3rd grade classroom, as the packet also meets the 2nd grade standards.
Each of the five writing assignments includes a Pre-writing exercise asking students to take notes from the text and a Post-writing editing exercise for self- and peer-editing.
My Father’s Dragon: GRAMMAR PACKET (Sentence-level grammar and parts of speech for Common Core Conventions of Standard English)
+ Answer Key + Grammar Packet for Teachers
This product uses content from My Father’s Dragon in teaching word-level and sentence-level grammar that is expected by Common Core standards for grades 2 and 3. Many products are available for reading comprehension, but fewer offerings specifically address the language standards.
For teachers who are intimidated by or uncomfortable teaching “grammar,” the product also includes an explanation for teachers that is more in-depth than what is in the student workbook. This is a good resource to use if you are nervous about how to teach grammar in 2nd/3rd grade!
All of the examples and exercises use content from the text. This makes learning grammar more interesting and more meaningful to the students as it relates to the reading they are doing daily.
My Father’s Dragon: FUN BOOK (Activity Book) for Reading Comprehension
This could be called an “interactive notebook” or an “activity book” but my students have dubbed it a “fun book.”
While reading My Father’s Dragon, the students create this cut-and-color-and-glue activity book. Beyond fun, it covers important reading skills:
**Cause & Effect
**Using the text to find answers and cite page number
**Evaluating the text
**Adding your opinion
Individual products cost $4 each. You save 25% by purchasing the bundle for $12.
