Mysteries are an engaging literacy unit to teach. Introducing mystery
books to your students will transform even the most reluctant reader into a avid reader.
MYSTERY GENRE UNIT (Engaging Reading and Writing Activities for grades 2-5)
This unit is so engaging that when we did it in my classroom during the last week of school (while the kids all had summer vacation on their mind) they all came in excited to read with their detective clubs and were happily writing right up until the last day of school. No joke. I’ve never seen kids so motivated to learn that late in the school year.
My son (who was a 3rd grader at the time in my teaching partner’s classroom) actually said, “I can’t wait to go to school so I can read my mystery book with my friends!”
You can only imagine how excited I am to do this unit again this year in October. It will be great to lay the foundation for mysteries and build a love for the genre so early in the year. Because the printables in this packet can be used again and again they will make easy enrichment projects for many of my students.
The packet includes:
O pacing guide / lesson plans
O picture mystery books list
O a leveled list of chapter books to make it easy to match readers with titles
O vocabulary word wall cards (EDITABLE blank cards also)
O vocabulary matching game (EDITABLE blank cards also)
O character traits printable
O clues printable
O suspect printable
O mystery-themed story map for reader response
O Detective Club student group organizer (EDITABLE)
O badges for the students to wear (EDITABLE so you can add names)
O book assignment mission cards (EDITABLE so you can add names, #s and photos)
O book group meeting packets for encouraging discussions (EDITABLE COVER)
O graphic organizers for writing mysteries

The Reader Detective Club printables in this kit will help your students hold effective text-based discussions. If you are looking for more information, ideas and printables to use with books outside the mystery genre and to encourage great book discussions with your students I highly recommend two of my other popular products:
