Shakespeare is extraordinarily difficult for most readers. For young and old the struggle to comprehend archaic language via endless footnotes is exhausting and dispiriting. It’s time for something new.
Shakespeare 90|10: Macbeth is a uniquely crafted translation which replaces obsolete words with modern terms, all while maintaining Shakespeare’s voice and the full complexity of his poetry.
*** There are no footnotes defining archaic words. Instead, an archaic term is replaced with a modern word.
*** Every translated line is true iambic pentameter.
*** The original text is aligned side-by-side with the translation for fluid comparison.
*** Modern stage directions within the translation allow the play to be fully visualized.
*** Both the original text and the translation have greater clarity due to fully modern use of punctuation.
*** Impenetrable grammatical structure is gently disentangled whenever necessary.
My methodology allows a first-time reader (in school or at home) to enjoy the play without interruption. You can first read the translation straight through, or you can focus on the original and refer to the translation when needed.
A Shakespeare 90|10 book is a fully valid translation, nothing at all like the widely used “Simply Shakespeare” and "No Fear Shakespeare" series. Those are not true translations but rather transcriptions into modern prose. Such editions are useful for basic understanding but the author's genius has been badly flattened. My translation respects and fully reveals the original art.
The very structure of traditional texts (i.e. Folger, New Cambridge, Signet) is intimidating and, for many readers, overwhelming. Shakespeare 90|10 emphases simplicity and freedom from information overload.
*** The student is greeted with only a handful of introductory pages instead of the usual 30-50.
*** I provide endnotes instead of footnotes, and they are entirely optional. Instead of word glosses (which have now been absorbed into the text) there is a wealth of information to stimulate critical thinking and creative writing.
*** Adobe links connect the original text to the endnotes, then link back to the text.
My endnotes tackle a wide range of topics, from language to history to science. There is something of interest for every student. The notes range from brief and simple to lengthy and complex, so a student can be directed to topics which match their competencies. With this authentic, linguistically complete translation you have a new tool for investigating the endless fascinations of this masterpiece of Western literature.
