MACBETH ESCAPE ROOM: This fun and challenging escape activity is the perfect way to do a final review of the play. Students will work together in groups to complete varied tasks, all designed to test their knowledge. There are detailed instructions, checklists and answer keys for you to guide your students. There are clue cards to help students, bonus cards if they need an extra challenge, and "Toil and Trouble" cards to slow down the ones who want to take control. You will also find covers you can use to label your challenge folders.

Note: don't print this off moments before class! You will need a bit of time to get it all organized and ready to go.

Here's a look at the challenges:

INTRO: Scotland is a sick and suffering country under the reign of Macbeth. Malcolm and Macduff have the ability to save the country but they need help from other behind-the-scenes people, including you. Read on to find out the brave moves you will need to make in order to help Malcolm regain the throne that should be his.

Challenge One: Many are under the impression that Madcuff figured out what Macbeth was up to all by himself. Yes, he had a hunch, but he also had help from two other people who don’t get enough credit from Shakespeare. The first was Lady Macbeth’s lady-in-waiting. She’s seen and heard too much, but before she decides to pass information onto Macduff, she has to ensure that what her gut is telling her is correct – and she needs you to help her along the way.

Challenge Two: While you only see Fleance a few times in the play, he was actually spending a lot of time lurking in the shadows – and what he sees terrifies him. However, like the lady-in-waiting, he needs to ensure that he is correct. He’s young, so he needs guidance. Help him put together the clues that he will need to find the courage to speak out.

Challenge Three: Fleance observes the lady-in-waiting watching the Macbeths and he knows that she is suspicious. He confides in her and together they write a letter to Macduff. However, they know just how dangerous that is, so they encode it. Macduff has been suspicious all along, but when he receives this letter he is finally convinced that he must take action, whatever the cost. Help him crack the code so he can read the letter, and then assist him as he makes his way to Malcolm in England.

Challenge Four: Malcolm may have been silent since he fled to England in Act II, but he’s had Ross spying and sending him all the information that he needs to defeat Macbeth. He’s less trusting than his father was so he wants to make sure he knows the truth before he makes a move. You can help him by completing some tasks.

Challenge Five: Help Malcolm and Macduff get into the castle. In order to do so, you will need to test your knowledge of the things that have happened in the play.

The Final Puzzle: Once you have collected a phrase from each challenge, you will use it to find the final message and win the day!
