After teaching William Shakespeare's Macbeth, assign this alternative analytical essay!

Students will critique the 2010 Rupert Gould film adaptation of Macbeth, starring Patrick Stewart and Kate Fleetwoood. This PBS film follows the original script with great accuracy, but Gould takes many cinematic and creative liberties. Any film adaptation will work for this assignment, but Gould's full-length feature film is my favorite (and can be found on Vimeo.com!).

The summative assignment asks students to critique the film by comparing it against the original drama. This packet contains a description of the assignment (including objectives and requirements), an overview of the various components of a film review, an assignment checklist for student reference, and two rubrics: a traditional 4-point holistic rubric, and a scoring guide (known as the one point rubric, displaying proficiency criteria and a checklist for teachers to mark the score). Finally, the packet includes a short list of film terms, which students can identify and analyze while watching the film. I recommend completing a mini "practice" film critique first; I show the opening scene of the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, let students critique, then we discuss!

This assignment works well for students in upper-level English courses. It challenges students to identify, interpret, and analyze directorial decisions, while considering the original script and Shakespeare's intentions and themes. My students love this assignment because it functions the same as literary analysis, but is friendly for visual learners.
