This is a great way to get your students thinking about the themes in literature either during or after they read the play, although it seems to work best once the play is complete.
The packet includes four groups philosophical, theme-based questions meant to spark discussion between students. I usually allow the students to pick the topic of their choice (or their second or third choice if the groups fill up) and let the discussion run for roughly 20 minutes. During this time, I say nothing, allow the small group of students to discuss amongst themselves, and give feedback afterwards, as do the peers who are not part of the discussion. With four questions, this usually takes two class periods.
I love this activity because the students love having these philosophical discussions, it really improves their ability to construct an argument, and is something I can grade on the spot! Your purchase also includes the rubric.
