This assignment is intended to be done after students have read through at least Act III of Macbeth.
In this assignment, students are asked to consider various people/groups that were responsible for Banquo's death. After thinking of several, students make a pie chart choosing how much each person or group was to blame. Then they write a short essay justifying their thinking.
I have used this assignment with my 12th grade World Lit. students. It allowed students to understand that there was more than one person responsible for the death and that people can be guilty through their actions indirectly. Each of their responses is unique, which allows for an opportunity for some quality discussion.
