Prepare your students prior to reading Shakespeare’s Macbeth by building their background knowledge with this short-term group research project!

In order to understand Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, students will benefit from having knowledge of the historical time period.

The research topics in this project will also prepare students by building a frame of reference for the play’s setting, the characters in Macbeth, and also by providing them with the background knowledge needed to understand the play’s conflicts and events.

Students will be presented with the following five research options:

Topic #1: Background Information on Scotland during the Middle Ages and Key
Political Figures

Topic #2: 16th Century Philosophy and Beliefs

Topic #3: 16th Century Medical and Mental Illness Treatments

Topic #4: Religious and Political Controversies in 16th and 17th Century England

Topic #5: Society and Culture during the Elizabethan Era

Specific research questions and suggested subtopics are provided for each of the five research options in order to help guide students as they take notes during the research process!

Directions for sharing resources in Google Classroom and sharing with students via the Google Share link are included.
