You will find nothing conventional about this MACBETH unit. All my close reading study guides require students to encounter literature and DEAL WITH THE PRINTED WORD FIRST. I don't have them watch videos or listen to sound recordings before reading. I begin by teaching Common Core Reading Skills in my classroom. Then I teach viewing, listening, and speaking (purposes for which these materials are also quite useful).

WHAT'S UP WITH THE PHOTO OF THE BLOODY-NOSED FOOTBALL PLAYER?
It's an attempt to connect with the bloody story. Shakespeare's play explores the depths of the Anglo-Saxons' passion for violence. That passion of "controlled rage" is reflected in America's obsession for the game of football.
It's one thing to point to broad national and international developments to reveal how the great writers explore human nature through their work. It is quite another to admit personal connections in one's own life. I frequently did so to illustrate the universality of the literature we studied.
I admitted to my students that I played and coached the game of football. I did so for nearly 30 years. I admitted that I loved passionately, and at times, irrationally, this violent game. As a player, like Macbeth himself, I once longed to become a pro, and "catch the nearest way" in an effort to obtain special status.
My friend Gary snapped this photo in the fall of 1973 while I stood on the sidelines during a game, waiting to get back on offense. I well remember the passion of "controlled rage" inside me when he snapped that photo. Ten minutes later, I was stretched out in agony on the gridiron with a blown out knee.
Perhaps you share personal experiences in your own life as you study the literature in your own class?
