This product includes a template to guide students in analyzing the themes of Macbeth after they finish reading the play.
Included in the document are six (two-page) worksheets, one for each major theme of Macbeth: Fate vs. Free Will, Appearance vs. Reality, Power Leading to Corruption, Guilt, Defining Masculinity, and How Superstition Affects Behavior.
On each sheet, students are prompted to identify what they believe is the most important quotation that relates to the assigned theme and explain its context and significance. Then, students have to explain in a paragraph how the theme evolved over the course of the play. (Guiding points to consider when answering this questions are also provided.)
This assignment works well when students work in groups, divided across the six themes to complete the worksheet, and then present their ideas to the whole class.
Teacher familiarity with the quotations that support each of these themes is advised. Because there are so many options that students could choose, a key is not provided, but a teacher who knows the play should be able to easily evaluate the appropriateness of the quotations the students choose and how they describe their significance.
