This is a 52 page pack that covers the entire Macbeth play. Included are: an annotated map of Scotland, an annotated character list, annotated outlines for each act, and annotated outlines for each scene. The guides to the scenes start with a summary of each scene's principal character, setting, and events. Then the scene is broken down into the main events. For these events the handout includes summary and notes. The notes are primarily categorised as "Action," "Setting," "Character," "Vocabulary" and/or "Literary Devices." Devices discussed include personification, metaphor, symbolism, simile, and pathetic fallacy. The purpose of the notes is to clarify points that students often find difficult and to improve their reading skills. Notes include explanation of terms, devices, actions, and they also include information about the historical context, helping the student understand what this play may have meant to a Shakespearean audience. This pack could be used in several ways. The entire guide could be provided to students at the start of the play, allowing students to refer to it when they see fit and allowing the teacher to easily refer to it in class. Alternatively, each scene can be used as self-contained handout, allowing teachers to control the pace of reading and perhaps highlighting more important scenes. It is possible to use it for group activities. Each scene is broken into chunks. Groups could each be assigned a chunk and they converge in a jigsaw reading activity. The guide could also be useful for struggling students. It is not a rewrite of the play, but it does provide easy to understand explanations of the action and character in modern English.
