Sketch/Doodle notes are a great way to keep your students engaged in the lesson. Most students skip over extensive text and move straight to the pictures. That's how these notes can help your students more easily grasp abstract Biology concepts. They help students get straight to the main ideas, while providing a visually appealing way to engage them. While my experiences in my own classroom have taught me that these notes are beneficial to all students, they can be especially helpful for ELL students and students with learning disabilities. My students have come to expect them in every unit!
These sketch notes are designed to be used in conjunction with traditional lectures or on their own. I have used them independently in a discussion type of lecture, as well as an adjunct to traditional notes they take accompanying a slide-based lecture. They are great to use as a segue into the details of the lesson. In addition to the sketch notes, I have also included a fill-in sheet that you can have your students fill in as you discuss the topic, as well as a BONUS graphic organizer.
