I found an amazing article about the famous confessional poets Anne Sexton, Robert Lowell and Sylvia Plath, and how they all ironically spent time (sometimes simultaneously) in MacLean hospital being treated for their mental illnesses. Asylum life is such a presence in all of their poems. Here in my document I have the link to the article you can find online, as well as close reading questions I made (and a key) for students to respond to as they read. I open up my confessional poetry unit with this activity. See my other materials such as my Mad Poets Society PowerPoint, packet with poems and close reading questions, as well as a unit test and key.
This activity would also be good to use just as "informational text" reading experience.
