These two poetry activities (part of my Langston Hughes Poem Activities Bundle
) will help your students learn to analyze character and determine theme in poetry.
The first page is a description graphic organizer that guides students to consider the role of the speaker, the narrative poem's setting and conflict, and the mood of the poem to help them figure out what the poem's theme is. The worksheet is set up to help them visualize how all of these literary elements contribute to determining theme.
On the second page, students focus on the skills of character inference and theme. First they will characterize Madam, the poem's main character, using textual evidence from the poem; then they will use those details to make inferences about her character and determine the theme of the poem.
With these user-friendly graphic organizers and Langston Hughes' entertaining poem, your middle school students will be making inferences, characterizing, drawing conclusions, and supporting them with textual evidence in no time!
