These two poem activities (part of my Langston Hughes Poem Activities Bundle
will help your students learn to identify theme in poetry.
The first page is a description graphic organizer that guides students to consider the role of the speaker, the narrative poem's setting and conflict, and any feelings/moods the poem creates to help them figure out what the poem's message is. The worksheet is set up to help them visualize how all of these literary elements contribute to revealing the poem's theme.
On the second page, students focus on the skills of character inference and theme. First they will characterize Madam, the poem's main character, using direct quotes from the poem's text; then they will use those details to make inferences about her character and draw a general conclusion about the theme of the poem.
With these user-friendly graphic organizers and Langston Hughes' entertaining poem, your middle school students will be drawing conclusions and supporting them in no time!
