This activity was developed as a multi-day warm-up activity, but can be used as a stand-alone activity, as well. Using an excerpt of Madison's War Address to Congress for the War of 1812, the students will be asked to identify the author, audience, place, time, meaning, and purpose of the document. Students are also asked to explain the meaning of a phrase in context and complete two interpretation questions, which have a grading rubric included.
