Madlenka by Peter Sis / Reading Wonders Aligned
Madlenka is a story about a little girl who lives in a city. She has a loose tooth and wants to show her friends in her neighborhood. Many of Madlenka’s neighbors are from different places around the world and bring with them cultures they are very proud of. There’s a French baker, an Italian ice-cream man, a Latin American grocer, a retired opera singer from Germany, and many more. When Madlenka walks around her neighborhood, it’s like she is walking around the world.
As an SLP, I try my hardest to match my therapy materials with the reading wonders themes or essential questions my students are learning in the classroom. Personally, I find the "culture" theme one of the hardest ones to teach. I worked really hard on this language + literacy lesson plan to help me with the "culture" theme and I hope it can help others too!
I use this lesson plan for my K-2nd grade students *BUT* since most grade levels teach about culture & traditions, you could use the story of Madlenka and my lesson plan with any grade! It's great to use when targeting listening comprehension, vocabulary, and retell.
