I use this in my classroom as we discuss expository text features. Once the students are familiar with the different features, they can use them as they write their own magazine article. I like to have them write an article about a new animal species they have discovered or one that they can research. I really love using this because it takes their understanding to the next level when they have to actually put the features to use in a meaningful way. AND they absolutely love getting to create and write with this balance of structure and freedom.
The article layout features a place for a title, headings, illustrations/diagrams/maps, and captions.
