Teach about the contributions of Maggie Lena Walker, the first female bank president, and a famous 20th Century Virginian, using music. This worksheet uses 1 song that can be accessed on YouTube or Teachers Pay Teachers for students to listen to as a part of the activity. This worksheet also contains an answer key, the song lyrics, and a list of extension activities for expanding student knowledge. It also addresses Virginia Studies SOL .9D - identifying the political, social, and/or economic contributions made by Maggie Lena Walker.
How to use this resource:
Students will preview the questions on page 1 then listen to the song on YouTube while following along with the lyrics on page 2. Students will then answer the questions on page 1. When students are done, they can continue to be engaged by completing the extension activities on page 3. The extension activities include an inferencing activity and instructions for students to use the song's instrumental for writing their own songs about Maggie Walker. The answer key for page 1 is located on page 4.
***Editor's note: We have been asked a few times why Maggie Walker is described as, "bad and boujee." This article
explains much of the historical use of the words "bad." This article
also explains the use of word "boujee." Our use of the word follows those historical uses. We also use the word because many students are familiar with those terms. Describing Maggie as "affluent" or "wealthy" has no resonance with most students. However, they are familiar with the various nuances of the words "bad, boujee" and clearly understand this description in reference to Maggie Walker.
