Phonemic awareness is the first, and most important, step when learning to read.
This game allows students to practise this vital skill while having fun with their classmates.
Students sit in a circle and pass around a hat that has the picture cards in it. While passing it around, they sing the rhyme (provided). Whoever has the hat when they finish the rhyme has to choose a picture card out of the hat and segment the word. There are a variety of pictures, with different number of sounds to suit any ability. It includes 84 different picture cards!
There are different ways that this resource can be used depending on your little learners.
- If you are focussing on beginning sounds, students can look at the picture and say the beginning sound (or middle/end)
- Students can say how many sounds are in the word and sort them
- Students can segment the word and the class can blend it together
