♥ What is the MAGIC NUMBER? ♥
This product is to be used when working with "Writing Linear Equations given the a point and the equation of a perpendicular line"
Students are asked to write the equation in 2 different forms:
☑ Slope-Intercept Form
☑ Standard Form
In this activity the lines may have different type of slopes:
↘ Negative Slope
↗ Positive Slope
→ Zero Slope
↑ Undefined Slope
This activity comes in 2 different versions:
❖ Version 1:
The given equation is always in Slope-Intercept Form (All 16 Questions)
❖ Version 2:
The given equation is either in Slope-Intercept Form (8 Questions) or the Standard Form(8 Questions)
✴ Students would need to feel comfortable with working with slope-intercept form and changing it to standard form as the y
-intercept in some cases maybe a fraction.
✴ I am hoping that students would become very efficient in this activity as PURPOSELY I included the y
-intercept as one of points in this activity written as an ordered pair (0, #) in at least one example.
In each version, there are 16 questions provided, students will check for their answers on the Grid Form. Students are asked to match the number of the question with the letter of the answer. If a student chooses the correct answers, the sum of the numbers in the grid will be the same horizontally, vertically, and diagonally
. The four corner boxes
and the four center boxes
will total the same amount, as well. If the students find that particular "same" sum, then they have the MAGIC NUMBER
If the sums are not the same, then the student would need to check his/her work.
There are 2 options to use this product.
→ → Option 1: Individual Practice
→ → Option 2: Groups or Stations
In Option 1: Individual Practice
students could work on this activity alone in the classroom, at home, or with a sub.
In Option 2: Groups/Sessions
students will be divided into groups of 4 where each member of the group will be assigned a duty as described in the activity. Each student will select 4 questions to work with from the 16 provided. When completed students will map their answers to the grid and check to see their Magic Number.
Number of members of groups maybe adjusted based on attendance and so on. This activity could be used in groups of 2 or as Pair-Share
. In this case, each student will get 8 questions to work with instead of 4.
This is a great way to review before a quiz or a test. This activity could even be assigned as a homework, recap of the lesson, review, individual practice, cooperative learning, or even while you're out. It is self monitoring. It is a good practice over this particular concept.
Research has shown that using self-assessment with students can positively effect self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation levels in students (Rolheiser and Ross).
