Formula fiction is literature in which the storylines and plots are used and repeated throughout a series. While the Magic Tree House series is meant for early readers, middle grades will have a blast figuring out the formula to these early chapter books!
As writing teachers, we often teach the "story roller coaster" (rising action, climax, through resolution), with little understanding of how this roller coaster is actually used in chapter books. In this unit, students will read individual books to discover the "roller coaster" formula of the Magic Tree House series.
Students will think about:
~Word count, page numbers, and sentence structure.
~How the author uses language and vocabulary.
~Discover the umbrella problem in each book and the mini problems in each chapter.
~Notice when Character Development, Setting, Main Problem, Events, Falling Action, and Resolution are revealed in each book.
~Character traits and development.
