Product Description
This unit is a paired non- fiction/fiction differentiated unit used with The Magic Tree House books-Rags and Riches-Kids in the Time of Charles Dickens and A Ghost Tale for Christmas Time. We purchase enough copies so students can partner read the Fact Tracker. Students are encouraged to work together but students can work independently.

Students take notes on each chapter as they are reading. They focus on three details for each chapter sub-heading.

Students extend their knowledge by learning important vocabulary words.

Alphabet Soup allows students use the information read and recorded to create a sentence summarizing facts from the text beginning with a "surprise" letter in the alphabet. This helps them to synthesize information from the text.

Included in this 28 page unit are:

1. Directions
2. Fact recording printable for each chapter
3. Vocabulary printable with answer key
4. Alphabet Letters for teacher use
5. Alphabet Soup printable for each chapter

The following activities are designed for the teacher to assign or for students to choose and complete. There are student/teacher directions for each individual activity.

6. Research Activity
7. Comparing Past to Present
8. Persuasive Story: The Gift of Writing
9. A Christmas Carol Reading- Drama
10. Compare and Contrast Word Sort: Wealthy and Poor Class
11. Holiday Art
12. Common Core Standards
13. A student cover page

The fiction story A Ghost Tale for Christmas Time can be read as a read aloud. Students have success with listening comprehension because the author pairs the two books connecting facts and ideas. This book can be purchased or checked out from the library.

All the activities are tied to the Common Core Standards. This unit is great with 3rd and 4th grade classrooms and works great during the month of December.
